(1959) An incredible piece of Poly-Pop history! This is one of the famed Abalone Screens made by Schmaltz & Van Oosting (Oceanic Arts) for The Coco Palms Resort on Kauai. However, before that, this larger style was used at the seaside venue of TIKI-JO at the Hotel Miramar in Santa Monica, California. The place was ahead of its time and featured incredible decor by Eli Hedley, Cargoes by Carter and Schmaltz & Van Oosting. See the reference photo of a similar abalone screen in situ with the Tiki-Jo signature Tiki by Hedley. This large piece was made to be suspended allowing light to shine through the embedded Japanese glass fishing floats. Crushed abalone covers the surface on both side. Absolutely stunning! 40"x60". VG+ with typical wear and minor chipping throughout.
