(1953) A most historic tiki, two of which flanked the entrance to Steve Crane's The LUAU in Beverly Hills, CA. This figure dates back to the venue opening in 1953. The LUAU can be considered one of the first restaurants of the TIKI ERA, the second wave of the 20th Century Polynesian Pop movement. The tikis and other misc decor during the early years of The LUAU were created by Jerry Janek, an accomplished set builder at MGM Studios during the golden era. Janek created much of the fanciful set pieces for The Wizard of Oz (1939). The figure, one of only two made is composed of a mix of gypsum plaster, straw and burlap, a technique commonly used by Hollywood during the early years as it was very carvable and somewhat stable. Another historic artifact in the world of Tiki! Please be aware that this is rather fragile and will require very special crating for shipping at substantial cost.85"x19"x11"VG+ with typical wear
