(1930s) Ladies and gentlemen, it doesn't get more proto Tiki than this! These paintings were rescued from one of the most mythic spots in Los Angeles/Hollywood history! THE WOLF'S LAIR is an incredible 1920s estate in the Hollywood Hills by real estate developer, Milton Wolf. The French Norman-estate overlooks Lake Hollywood with breathtaking views. The house also features a guest house designed by famed architect, John Lautner. Featured is a hidden speakeasy decked out in full pre-Tiki "Tropics" style with woven mattings, rich bamboo accents and furnishings and lovely hand-painted canvas renderings of tropical settings and lightly clad wahines. Unfortunately, the musician Moby purchased the property about 15 years ago and tore out this gem of a feature. Luckily, the paintings (which also served as secret compartment stowage nook covers) were rescued. Here, we have three examples from this incredible slice of Hollywood history. This large painting features an idyllic setting in a tropical lagoon. Two free-spirited wahines frolic in this paradise amusing themselves with a cadre of small monkeys! It's naive, unaware style is everything one thinks of when looking at hung art in the many tropical venues seen in black and white photos. Here, a testament to the vibrant nature of the 1930s Tropics era, one can enjoy these in the saturated technicolor of these original oil renderings. Stretched on canvas an in its original faux-bamboo frame from the Wolf's Lair! Metal hinges are intact on the back where the painting served as a secret door cover. 23"x33.5". VG+ with typical wear from a painting of this age. Minor craquelure and chipping. Displays beautifully.
