(1970) One of the crown jewels of MAI-KAI collecting is this original chandelier lamp from the fabeled, yet ill-fated BANGKOK ROOM dining area. When Jack Thornton was forced to retire due to a health issue, Bob Thornton wasted no time taking the MAI-KAI into the future with major expansion plans. During his pan-Asian honeymoon with new bride, Mirelle, Bob embarked on an extensive buying trip in Thailand for a new addition to the restaurant. He would commission George Nakashima and Florian Gabriel to design a temple worthy of the gods: The BANGKOK ROOM was to rival the ancient palaces and temples of Thailand itself. This project was handled with the care Imagineers place in Disney theme park attractions. Bejeweled columns, carved Hindu gods and elaborate lighting would all be slathered in gold to truly draw awe from those who entered the ambitiously themed space. Unfortunately, the Bangkok Room, for all its pomp and grandeur, could not compete with the action-packed floor show on the main stage...a show which was completely cut off from view whilst in this room. Because of this, the Bangkok Room dining hall only lasted about seven years. Jack threw in the towel and the Bangkok Room was finally closed to dining in 1978. But what the world lost with a dining room, it gained in spades with the new, improved MAI-KAI GIFT SHOP! What is on offer here is one of the elaborate temple chandeliers which were removed when the BORA-BORA gift shop moved over and precious retail space needed to be made. This fantastic lamp is heavy and large, made oddly enough of plaster and metal with hanger chains. The surface is antiqued with aged gilding and embedded plastic jewels. We have not tested it for electrical and recommend new fixtures be added. It is nothing short of spectacular and will surely be the ultimate treasure for any collector of Polynesian Pop fantasy! VG+ with some cracks and chipping to the surface. Very heavy and requires special shipping considerations. 23.5"x11" chain to finial-34".
