(1950s) The MAI-KAI was such an immediate success that within the first year they were planning improvements and expansions. By the late 1950s, it was apparent that the original single driveway entrance was inadequate to handle the incoming and outgoing traffic. On other fronts, the restaurant was running out of adequate storage space for the amount of operational supplies required to handle the ever growing crowds of diners. The Thornton's first acquired space next to their immediate property to build a warehouse facility on the immediate west of the driveway. That "warehouse" building would be house materials inside while theming the exterior as a peaceful native hut with running waterways around and under it. At one point, even a perimeter bar would operate there. The next few lots relate to the planning of that expansion. This area eventually became the BORA BORA building and was just recently bulldozed for the latest upgrades to the MAI-KAI. Here is a master overview sketch by McKirahan for the "warehouse building" and its gardens. Also featured is the now split in/out driveway entrance with two wooden bridges spanning the expanded waterways. The main MAI-KAI stage A-frame can be seen in the far left of the image. In the coming years, the Thornton's and McKirahan will plan a most ambitious expansion beyond the plan noted here with a second restaurant and an impressive luxury resort!
