(1950s) In the late 1950s, a series of these beautiful, double sided PNG war shields were created by Schmaltz-Van Oosting for the MAI-KAI's short-lived FIJI ROOM. During the making of the Godfathers of Tiki book, LeRoy described the novel use of PNG shields as room louvers to separate the space. A hinge pin was added to the top and bottom edges of these shields so they could pivot in place. Tim "Swanky" Glazner later found color photos of this room in Bob Van Dorpe's archives and you can now see their application in situ! The shield on offer here can actually be seen in the photo as the first panel on the left (the "screen-match" is the paint pattern on the striped side of the shield). Beautiful patina with the original polychrome color treatment. VG+ with typical wear. 36"x8".
