(1950s) Fascinating molded rubber cartoony native wall hanging features the image of a semi-nude woman dancing to a male conga drum player against palm trees and huts. Chris Mueller was an incredibly accomplished sculptor in Hollywood as well as architectural decor in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mueller and his father, whom he trained under sculpted a good deal of the 1939 Pan Pacific Exposition still standing today in Exposition Park. Mueller also sculpted many famous Universal Monsters in the 1940s and 50s. Walt Disney brought on Mueller to sculpt much of early Disneyland including the JUNGLE CRUISE ANIMALS, the PETER PAN FLYING GALLEONS, the PHANTOM BOATS, decor on SLEEPING BEAUTY CASTLE and so much more...much of that is still in use at the parks today! Chris was a Polynesian freak and loved the genre. He had a wonderland built in his personal backyard in Burbank, CA. This novelty piece was most probably done for that. Although, highly insensitive culturally, it's a stunning piece and the sculpt is exquisite. The rubber is in excellent shape for being over 70+ years old. Full wooden frame and backing. Frame:15"x17.5" Hanging:8"x9.5". VG slight stain on upper right wood backboard.
