(1940s)* Here is a fragile, yet highly historic original lamp made by the guy who started it all. This is one of Eli Hedley's original "beachcomber" style hanging lamps. Hedley was know specifically for taking materials found 'adrift' along the beaches of Southern California and fashioning them, literally into a new way of life. This rustic lamp is very fragile and is being sold as that. Remember, these were not made on a commercial/industrial level. Underwriter Laboratories, be damned! It was created with found materials such as driftwood sticks and some type of celluloid shade in the interior to diffuse light. Old iron nails hold it together. When Kelbo's opened in Los Angeles in 1946, Hedley was one of the first suppliers to offer decor. Although we are not certain, it is estimated that this was from that first round of decor. This piece was acquired by Sven when Kelbo's went out of business. It has a unique look onto itself and really sums up the creativity of the Polynesian Pop movement Eli Hedley conjured out of thin air. Aagin, this is fragile and the starting bid takes that into consideration. GOOD with some broken pieces and general wear. 15"dia x 21".
