(1954) Charles McKirahan was perhaps one of the most lauded, forward-thinking mid-century modern architects of not only his time, but the present day. After serving in the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific, McKirahan took up architecture and very quickly rose in status across the South Florida post-war commercial development boom. He was sought out by the brothers Thornton in their quest to create the ultimate Polyneisan Pop palace. Taking what he learned during a whirlwind tour of Poly-Pop establishments as well as an inspirational jaunt across the Pacific islands with the Thornton's, McKirahan went on to design a modern masterpiece in the mythic, MAI-KAI of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. On offer here is a truly historic relic of that venture: An early/exploratory sketch of the now familiar street perspective of the MAI-KAI. The rough concepts of the iconic A-frame roofline, the cross-torch marquee signage and signature stone idols are present. McKirahan's sketches will become more defined and finally, detailed plot plans and blueprints will pave the way for construction to begin in 1955. In 1956, the MAI-KAI will open and become one of the most successful commercial restaurants in the nation within its first year of operation! Any Charles McKirahan original art is a treasure and absolutely unheard of on the open market. With this incredibly significant drawing, one can own a serious piece of Tiki history. Graphite on onion skin, conservation cleaned and mounted on preservation rag paper. Ready for framing. VG+ with original paper chipping before conservation. Framing this visibly or matted out to the image itself is the choice of the buyer. IMAGE 18"x10.5", SHEET 23.75"x22.5"..
