(1960s) The black moai seen here was actually commissioned by Danny Balsz through OMC based on a carving by LeRoy Schmaltz of Oceanic Arts. The original version of this Moai was made by OA for use as first a Tiki table lamp and then as a matching table lighter. As LeRoy recalled, Danny "borrowed" the master carving for a few months while he had OMC copy it for use as his first Moai mugs. Eventually, this mug became an OMC catalog item with several other businesses using it with their particular branding such as Trader Dick's and The Fireside bar in Wisconsin. This is obviously an early mug not only for the "So San Gabriel" location marking (which was the pre-re-zoning of Monterey Park) but also for the dodgy quality of the casting which is not as refined as later production of this mug. A rare early THE TIKIS artifact! VG+. 3.5"dia x 7.5".
