(1960s) These monkeypod tables have been a staple of the commercial Polynesian trade since the 1930s. For the most part, these were created by Jerry Janek, an MGM set maker whose work includes the fanciful sets of Munchkinland and OZ for 1939's The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland. Janek also did a lot of the early design and dressing work for Steve Crane's The Luau in Beverly Hills. Janek would make these organically cut monkeypod table to order and at some point in the late 1950s, began supplying them to Schmaltz-Van Oosting for sales to Polynesian palaces all across the company as catalog items.
