(1960s) A gorgeous rendering of the MAI-KAI restaurant in a fantasy setting of a cozy jungle village. Rendered on black velvet, this item was hand made exclusively for the famed MAI-KAI gift shop in the 1960s. Black velvet paintings, from Elvis to Spanish bullfighters to this fabulous hand-painted representation of a Polynesian village the velvet painting craze lasted from the late 50s-mid 70s. Presented is one of the more unusual paintings from the era as very few were focused on single line brushstrokes to create a multi-dimensional image. Wood bamboo frame created at Oceanic Arts in Whittier. 45"x18". VG some minor flecking on black velvet and cracking to thin parts of the bamboo frame. Displays well. Rare.
