(1960s) Certainly another highlight of the OA collection. This large format Maori Tiki figure stands out as a jewel of the catalog. These were expensive to produce at the time and were usually presented as a centerpiece at the venues for which they were purchased. Both Bob and LeRoy confirmed that these were only made in very small numbers. One of them is in the collection of Sven Kirsten, who purchased it directly from Danny Balsz at THE TIKIS. Oddly enough, that tiki was on loan to Danny from OA and subsequently, never returned. Sven? Are you listening? Here is the master pattern carving by LeRoy Schmaltz. The eyes are simulated Pahua shell using semi-clear capiz shell and cleverly painted with a mottled color texture to replicate the refraction of light in its surface. A truly stunning piece.36"x16"x4".VG+ with typical wear.
